Strictly speaking, Yoga postures are only one part of a comprehensive system whose ultimate goal is the unification of body, mind and spirit. Thus, Yoga is a set of disciplines, with Asanas, or postures, being only the best known part in the West. The rest of the disciplines have to do with meditation and a code of conduct.
Asana means “comfortably held posture.” This word is in Sanskrit, a very ancient language of India. Such postures have been developed for several thousand years, mainly in South Asia.
The differences between Asanas and what we can call exercise – such as running or gymnastics – are multiple, highlighting the focus: while exercise focuses outward, towards the development of muscles, for example, in the case of Asanas the focus is internal.
