The nearest airport to Koh-Phangan is in Koh-Samui with frequent/daily flights from within Thailand and outside of it as well. In Koh-Samui’s airport there is a travel counter located just before going out of the airport. There you can buy a joined ticket for a taxi to the pier and a ferry ticket to Koh-Phangan, to Thong-Sala pier. The ferries are run by Seatran Discovery and Lomprayah and depart several times daily until the afternoon, last one at around 16:00 PM. The ferry ride is about 30-45 minutes.
The next nearest airport to Koh-Phangan is on the mainland in Surat-Thani. From there, you would need a joined bus and ferry ticket to arrive to Thong-Sala pier.
By bus
The cheapest way to travel is to take one of the overnight buses from Bangkok. The bus leaves from Khao-San Road and arrives at Surat-Thani. Then you continue to the local pier from which you can take a ferry to Thong-Sala pier in Koh-Phangan. The entire journey is provided in one joined ticket and arranged by travel agencies in Khao-San Road Bangkok.
By train
Taking an overnight train with a proper bed from Bangkok is yet another way to travel. Trains arrive at Surat-Thani. Then you continue to the local pier from which you can take a ferry to Thong-Sala pier in Koh-Phangan. The entire journey is provided in one joined ticket and arranged by travel agencies in Khao-San Road Bangkok. Train tickets from Surat-Thani back to Bangkok should be usually reserved in advance, particularly during high season, and this can be done by the same travel agency.
