There is nothing more unique than spending time a a cork forest in winter. Outside you are likely to find cold sunshine while inside the log fire is burning. We have no fewer than three fireplaces that are lit every day and our cook is a five-star chef.
Your host, Paul, is a former journalist and writer who has lived in almost ten countries ranging from Oman to Sweden.

Welcome to Monte da Japónica, a 120 hectare estate located in the foothills of Serra D’Ossa, a small mountain range in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Set in an olive grove within a cork forest, this haven of peace has been recently reinvented into a wellbeing retreat for physical, emotional and spiritual recovery. With an innocent, old-fashioned charm, this is a laidback hideaway with a touch of magic offering comfortable lodging in a historic family estate.
Monte da Japónica opened for retreats under the Shadows in the Grass brand in early 2022. We organize our own retreats and co-host retreats led by third parties. All retreat packages include accommodation, three deliciously nourishing meals per day and offer a daily trip to explore local towns and villages as well as a daily walk in the forest. Longer walks, up to four hours, can be arranged.

Our chef offers a varied cuisine of Portuguese and International dishes tailored to the needs of the group. Food is vegetarian heavy but meat and fish dishes can be served and vegans are fully catered for.
We are very careful with allergens. Most meals are taken around a communal table to promote conversation and friendship.
