Located on the opposite side of Ancient Olympia, the renowned island of Zakynthos is where the retreat will be held. Over the course of the next five days, participants will engage in island excursions combined with yoga sessions. Two entire days will be dedicated to exploring Ancient Olympia and Peloponnese. These days will entail an early morning ferry ride from Zakynthos to Kyllini port, followed by a visit to Ancient Olympia, attendance at a ceremony, exploration of other historical sites in the area, and a return ferry trip to Zakynthos the following day. The ferry journey lasts just 1 hour and 15 minutes, with Ancient Olympia being approximately an hour away from Kyllini port.
The primary retreat is scheduled to be held in Zakynthos. Accommodation will be provided at the Palatino hotel in Zakynthos town, offering a range of themed activities daily such as Olympic education, yoga, exploration, hiking, and visits to different attractions.
Castle of Zakynthos built by the Venetians
Above Zakynthos Town, on the hill of Bohali, is situated the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos. Archaeological excavations have revealed that this castle was built on the grounds of the ancient acropolis of the island and a former Byzantine castle. The construction of the Castle of Zakynthos was finalized by the Venetians in 1646 AD, featuring the Winged Lion of Saint Mark, an emblem of the Venetian empire, positioned above the main entrance. During that era, the castle served as the headquarters and dwelling of the Venetian Proveditor, who was the island's administrator, along with other officials. Over time, due to warfare, natural disasters, and the passage of time, the castle suffered partial damage.
In 1812, the British Empire assumed control of the Ionian islands, leading to the reconstruction of the castle and the construction of new facilities like barracks, powder stores, and the British Parliament house. Numerous churches were located within the castle grounds, including the Byzantine Church of the Savior (San Salvatore or Domo) from the 12th century, the Church of Saint Francis from the 14th century, Santa Barbara Church, Virgin Mary Laurentena Church, and Saint John the Baptist Church.
Kilini Baths
Traversing a forest filled with eucalyptus trees and thick vegetation near the Ionian coast leads to the original ancient thermal springs and baths at the location "Litzi" (Lindzi) of Kyllini. Adjacent to these are the remnants of the Roman baths, which continue to draw numerous visitors, much like they did in ancient times. The Roman baths stand out due to their construction using optical bricks and reinforced mortar, a characteristic building technique of that era. The facility comprised sections for cold and hot baths, along with spaces for bathers to wait and prepare.
The sulfur compounds present in the water from the Lychee springs provide beneficial properties that aid in combating various diseases, particularly those affecting the respiratory system, skin, arthritis, and digestive system. Moreover, the high concentration of "hydrosulfide" in the spring water contributes to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Many guests seize the chance to enjoy complimentary "mud treatments" by applying the medicinal mud onto their skin, allowing it to work its magic for a few minutes before rinsing off with the therapeutic spring water on site.
Ancient Olympia
Olympia, located in a valley in the Peloponnese, has been populated since ancient times. By the 10th century B.C., Olympia had evolved into a hub for the veneration of Zeus. The Altis, the sacred precinct dedicated to the gods, houses a remarkable collection of artworks from ancient Greece. Alongside temples, the site also preserves the ruins of various athletic facilities constructed for the Olympic Games, which commenced in Olympia in 776 B.C. and recurred every four years.
Chlemoutsi castle
Originally named Château Clermont, this remarkable building was known as Castle Tornese to travelers and as Chloumoutzi to the Byzantines. Positioned strategically, the impressive fortress protected the capital Andravida, the port of Glarentza, and the Villehardouin family palace located inside its walls.
